Founded in 1977 by Paul Watson, Sea Shepherd became internationally known for direct-action campaigns against illegal fishing, whaling and other threats to marine wildlife. Its activities have included vessel patrols, removal of illegal fishing gear, documentation of environmental offences and cooperation with authorities.
What is Sea Shepherd? 🏴☠️🌊
Sea Shepherd is an international marine conservation movement with independent organisations and regional groups. Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and Sea Shepherd Global operate through different structures and volunteer recruitment channels. Founder Paul Watson now leads the separate Captain Paul Watson Foundation. These organisations share elements of their history but should not be treated as interchangeable.
Volunteering at sea and on land
Volunteers serving aboard Sea Shepherd vessels may assist with deck operations, navigation, maintenance, cooking, engineering, communications, media or other duties according to their experience and the needs of each campaign. Life on board can involve demanding schedules, extended deployments and challenging weather conditions.
Land-based activities may include beach cleanups, educational events, fundraising, campaign support and community outreach. Availability and participation requirements depend on the organisation and local chapter.
