Conditions vary by host. involving the restoration, repair and improvement of existing buildings. Hosts may be renovating private homes, old farmhouses, community spaces, guesthouses or retreat centres.
Some opportunities involve painting, decorating and simple DIY tasks, while others require experience in carpentry, plastering, tiling or more substantial building work. Accommodation and meals may be offered in exchange for help, depending on the host.
What is renovation? 🏠🔨
Renovation means repairing, restoring or updating an existing building or space to improve its condition, appearance or use. It may include repainting rooms, replacing finishes, repairing damaged parts or adapting an old property for a new purpose. Unlike routine maintenance, renovation generally involves a more substantial improvement or change. Some projects also require construction work.
Volunteering on a renovation project
Depending on the stage of the project, volunteers may help prepare surfaces, paint walls, remove old materials, repair furniture, organise tools, assist with basic carpentry or improve rooms and communal areas.
Some hosts welcome beginners for simple supervised activities. Others need people with practical building experience who can work more independently. Ask which tasks are planned during your stay and whether guidance or opportunities to learn are actually provided.
How to use this page
Check the publication date and confirm current renovation tasks, required experience, working hours, days off, accommodation, meals, minimum stay and any fees or contributions directly with the host. Renovation work can change considerably as a building project progresses.
Ask about tools, supervision, protective equipment and insurance. Work involving roofs, scaffolding, structural alterations, electricity, gas or other specialised installations may require qualified professionals and local authorisation.
For renovation work on commercial properties, also check whether local employment and immigration rules apply. Publication on Voluntouring.org does not constitute verification or endorsement of a host, its working conditions or safety arrangements.
