What is a rainforest? 🌳🌧️
A rainforest is a forest ecosystem characterised by high rainfall and humid conditions. Tropical rainforests are generally warm and often have several layers of vegetation, from the forest floor to the upper canopy. Temperate rainforests occur in cooler, wet regions, including parts of Scotland, and can support abundant mosses, ferns and lichens. Rainforests provide habitats for diverse species, contribute to water cycles and store carbon. Some are threatened by deforestation and habitat fragmentation.
Volunteering in rainforest environments
Depending on the project, volunteers may help plant native trees, remove invasive plants, maintain trails, observe wildlife, assist with environmental research or take part in restoration activities. Other hosts offer work exchanges involving gardening, agroforestryAgroforestry is a land-use approach that intentionally combines trees or shrubs with crops and/or livestock within the same farming system., accommodation, cooking or community life in rainforest regions.
If forest conservation is your main interest, ask how the activities relate to the surrounding ecosystem and whether appropriate training and supervision are provided.
How to use this page

For remote or outdoor projects, also ask about seasonal rainfall, terrain, transport, drinking water, protective equipment, health precautions and insurance.
