Indigenous Peoples are highly diverse and live in many different regions of the world. The United Nations does not use a single universal definition of Indigenous Peoples and recognises self-identification as a fundamental criterion. What belongs on this page? 🌍🤝
This page is for opportunities where a community or organisation identifies itself as Indigenous, or where the volunteer role is directly connected with an Indigenous community and its activities, leadership or priorities. Simply being located near an Indigenous community, visiting one during free time or mentioning Indigenous culture in passing is not enough.
Community leadership and cultural exchange
Projects can involve cultural exchange, education, conservation, language, traditional knowledge, agriculture, community development, advocacy or other activities. The important question is not simply what volunteers can experience, but how the project is organised and whether local people and the community concerned have a meaningful role in deciding what activities take place.
A locally led project may also fit the Grassroots volunteering or Cultural exchange sections. Projects connected with land, discrimination, cultural rights or access to justice may also appear under Human rights when those issues are genuinely part of their work.
How to use this page
Read each listing carefully and check who runs the project, who requested the volunteer role, what activities are actually needed and how the community is involved. Confirm the working hours, accommodation, meals, minimum stay and any mandatory fees or contributions directly with the host.
Be especially thoughtful about photography, filming, interviews, research, social media and the collection or sharing of traditional knowledge. Ask what is appropriate before recording people, ceremonies, homes, cultural practices or community information, and respect local decisions when something is private or not intended for visitors.
Avoid assuming that a community exists primarily as a cultural experience for travellers. A responsible exchange should have clearly defined activities, realistic expectations and respect for local leadership, privacy and community priorities.
