What is a rainforest?
A rainforest is a dense, tropical forest that receives high annual rainfall, usually over 2000 mm per year, creating a lush, green environment. It is characterized by a closed, continuous tree canopy that creates a layered structure. The uppermost layer, or the emergent layer, consists of tall trees that rise above the general canopy. Below this is the canopy layer itself, which houses the majority of plant, insect, and animal species due to its abundant food and shelter.
The understory beneath the canopy is home to smaller trees and plants adapted to the low light conditions. The forest floor is the lowest layer, where decomposing plant and animal matter replenishes the soil with nutrients. Rainforests are incredibly biodiverse, hosting millions of species, many of which are yet to be documented. This biodiversity includes a vast array of trees, plants, mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects.
Rainforests play a crucial role in the Earth’s climate system by storing carbon and regulating global temperatures.
They are also vital for their role in the water cycle, as they contribute to local and regional precipitation patterns. Moreover, they provide numerous resources for indigenous communities and have contributed to modern medicines with plant-derived pharmaceuticals. However, rainforests are under threat from deforestation, largely due to logging, agriculture, and urban expansion, leading to habitat loss and a decline in biodiversity.
