What is ‘pocket money’?

Sometimes, a volunteer experience, whether it’s a lengthy or brief one, in a European Union country or anywhere around the world, can provide not just the opportunity to acquire a new language and explore various fields of engagement, but may also encompass expenses for food, lodging, transportation, and even reimburse additional costs. This is commonly referred to as “pocket money.”

In the context of travel and volunteering programs, “pocket money” refers to a modest allowance provided to participants. It covers personal expenses like meals, transportation, and incidentals. It ensures volunteers have some financial support while contributing their time and efforts, making it easier for them to engage in meaningful activities without worrying about basic costs.

For example, the European Voluntary Service (EVS) allows young people aged 17 to 30 to live abroad for up to 12 months without spending almost a penny, helping to carry out the activities of a non-profit association. With EVS, volunteering is a great opportunity for personal growth, becoming a path that can offer advantages also for inclusion in the world of work. Young Europeans are increasingly aware of this, as demonstrated by the dramatic increase in participation in this program, which began seventeen years ago.
