Explore library volunteering opportunities involving book organisation, cataloguing, community learning, literacy activities and practical support for libraries or resource centres.
Roles can vary from helping to establish a new community library to supporting events, organising collections or assisting regular library staff with educational and cultural activities.
What is a library? 📚
A library is an organised collection of books and other information resources made available for reading, study or community use. Libraries may also provide learning spaces, events, digital resources, children’s activities and support for schools or local organisations.
Library work and education
Library volunteering does not always mean teaching. Practical roles may include cataloguing and classifying books, shelving, organising materials, setting up simple library systems or supporting staff. Other projects combine library work with reading groups, language activities or community events.
When activities involve children or young people, confirm supervision, safeguarding procedures, privacy rules and the volunteer’s responsibilities. Educational activities should be clearly organised and should not place unsupervised responsibility for children on short-term volunteers.
