Language exchange 🗣️

Language and cultural exchange participants in Busan, South Korea

Explore language exchange volunteering opportunities around the world, including conversation clubs, cultural exchanges, English immersion programmes, international camps and hospitality exchanges.

Language exchange projects can offer an opportunity to practise foreign languages while meeting local people and learning about everyday life in another country. The arrangements vary considerably, so always read the individual listing carefully to understand what the host expects and what is offered in return.

What is a language exchange?

A language exchange is generally based on communication and mutual learning between people who speak different languages. Participants may practise conversation, share vocabulary and expressions, discuss their cultures or take part in informal activities together.

Some projects combine language practice with a broader cultural exchange, while others take place in schools, language centres, camps, cafés, families or community organisations.

The exchange does not always involve formal lessons. In some projects, volunteers are simply asked to have conversations, play games, participate in activities or spend time speaking their language with local participants.

Language exchange or language teaching?

Informal conversation practice is different from professional language teaching. A volunteer who speaks a language fluently is not automatically a qualified teacher.

If a project expects volunteers to prepare lessons, follow a curriculum, assess students, manage a classroom or teach independently, the role is closer to teaching and the host should explain what qualifications or previous experience are required.

You can browse opportunities specifically related to teaching English abroad if you are looking for roles where language instruction is a central part of the project.

What might volunteers do?

Depending on the project, activities may include:

  • informal conversation practice;
  • language games and group activities;
  • sharing culture, traditions and everyday experiences;
  • supporting conversation clubs;
  • helping at language camps or international events;
  • assisting teachers or programme coordinators;
  • participating in homestays or community exchanges;
  • helping with practical tasks as part of a wider hospitality or work exchange.

Always check the individual listing rather than assuming that every project tagged as language exchange involves the same activities.

Fair exchange and working hours

Some language exchanges provide accommodation, meals or other forms of hospitality in return for a reasonable amount of help or participation. Others may be organised as structured volunteering programmes or educational exchanges.

Before accepting an opportunity, ask how many hours and days per week are expected and what those hours actually involve. Informal conversation for a few hours should not gradually turn into full-time teaching, childcare, cleaning or other work that was not described beforehand.

Accommodation, food and other conditions should also be clearly explained before arrival.

Projects involving children and students

Many language exchange opportunities involve schools, camps, families or young learners. When children or teenagers are involved, ask the host about supervision, safeguarding procedures and the exact responsibilities assigned to volunteers.

Short-term volunteers should not automatically be given unsupervised responsibility for children simply because they speak another language. Formal teaching, childcare and other positions of responsibility may require suitable experience, screening or professional qualifications.

Visas and local rules

Language exchange can be treated differently under immigration and employment rules depending on the country, host and activities involved. Visa-free or tourist entry does not automatically mean that every unpaid activity is permitted.

This can be particularly relevant when the exchange takes place in a commercial language school, café, hostel or other business, or when volunteers perform regular duties that resemble paid employment.

Ask the host what arrangements normally apply to international participants and check the relevant official immigration information for your destination before travelling.

How to use this page

Open the opportunity that interests you and check the publication date, programme dates and current availability. Some older announcements may already be closed, full or archived.

Read the complete project description and look for the contact details at the end of the listing. Depending on the project, these may include an official website, email address or application form.

Before accepting an opportunity, confirm the expected activities, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, exact location, length of stay and any fees or contributions directly with the host.

Voluntouring does not organise placements, select participants, arrange visas or supervise the language exchange projects listed in this archive. Older announcements may remain online for archival and informational purposes.
