Explore kayaking volunteer and work exchangeA work exchange is an arrangement in which a traveller contributes an agreed amount of help to a host in return for benefits such as accommodation, meals or learning opportunities. Conditions vary by host. opportunities where using, supporting or learning to handle kayaks is genuinely connected with the project or participant experience.
Kayaking may appear in outdoor education, camps, marine and river projects, coastal tourism, hospitality activities or other programmes involving travel and recreation on the water.
What is kayaking? 🛶🌊
Kayaking means travelling over water in a kayak, a small narrow watercraft normally paddled while facing forward with a double-bladed paddle. Kayaks are used on lakes, rivers and coastal waters and range from recreational and touring models to specialised sea and whitewater kayaks.
Kayaking and canoeing
Kayaking and canoeing are closely related paddle sports, but they are not automatically interchangeable. Kayakers normally sit facing forward and use a double-bladed paddle, while many traditional canoeing activities use a single-bladed paddle and different seating or kneeling positions.
On Voluntouring, this tag is best used when kayaking is genuinely connected with the role, programme or structured activity. Simply having access to a kayak during free time is not enough on its own.
How to use this page
Read each listing carefully to understand whether kayaking is part of the volunteer role, training, guiding, equipment support or an organised activity. Ask whether previous paddling or swimming experience is required and what instruction is provided.
Conditions can vary considerably between calm lakes, rivers, sea kayaking and whitewater. Confirm what type of water and equipment are involved, whether life jackets or other safety equipment are provided, what happens in poor weather and whether qualified supervision is required for the activity.
