Horse riding 🏇

Horse riding volunteering opportunity at an equine project

Explore horse riding volunteering opportunities on farms, ranches, equestrian projects, sanctuaries and other places where riding may form part of the volunteer or work exchange experience.

Some projects offer occasional recreational riding, while others may involve trail rides, exercising horses, groundwork or more structured equestrian activities. Riding should never be assumed simply because a listing involves horses.

Some opportunities may be seasonal, archival or no longer active. Always check the publication date and confirm current riding activities, horse-care arrangements and participation requirements directly with the host before applying.

What can a horse riding exchange involve?

Depending on the project, participants may help with:

  • feeding, watering and grooming horses;
  • cleaning stables, shelters or paddocks;
  • maintaining fields, fencing and equipment;
  • saddling and preparing suitable horses;
  • groundwork or supervised horse handling;
  • exercising horses where appropriate;
  • trail riding or recreational riding;
  • supporting other agreed activities around the farm or equestrian project.

The listing should explain how often riding is available and whether it is part of the volunteer role, an optional activity or an additional service offered by the host.

Riding experience and suitability

Be accurate about your riding experience when applying. A beginner, intermediate rider and experienced equestrian may be suitable for very different horses and activities.

Ask what style of riding is used, what level is required and whether volunteers are expected to ride independently, on trails or in more challenging terrain.

The host should also match riders with horses according to experience, size, temperament, health and the type of activity involved. Weight or other practical limits may apply for welfare and safety reasons.

Riding experience does not automatically qualify someone to train horses, handle difficult behaviour or teach other riders.

Horse welfare

The welfare of the horses should come before the participant’s desire to ride. Ask how horses are fed, rested, exercised and monitored and what veterinary and hoof-care support is available.

A horse that is injured, lame, elderly, recovering or otherwise unsuitable for riding should not be used simply to provide an activity for volunteers.

If riding lessons, trekking or other equestrian activities form part of a commercial operation, ask how horses’ workloads, rest periods and equipment are managed.

How to use this page

Open the opportunity that interests you and read the complete announcement. Look for the contact details at the end of the listing to find the host’s website, email address or application procedure.

Before applying, confirm:

  • the volunteer tasks and weekly hours;
  • the riding experience required;
  • how often riding is actually available;
  • whether riding is included in the exchange or involves an additional cost;
  • the horses and riding conditions involved;
  • supervision and safety procedures;
  • accommodation and meals;
  • minimum stay and days off;
  • insurance requirements;
  • any fees, deposits or other financial conditions.

Some opportunities may be fair exchanges with no mandatory participant fee, while others may request a contribution or programme fee. If payment is required, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and the applicable payment, cancellation and refund conditions before making a commitment.

A participant fee does not automatically make an equestrian project more or less responsible, ethical or worthwhile.

Voluntouring does not organise placements, select participants, arrange visas or mediate between volunteers and hosts. It does not process participant payments between travellers and host organisations. Publication on Voluntouring.org does not in itself constitute verification, endorsement or a recommendation of an opportunity.

Horse riding safety

Horse riding involves a risk of falls and other injuries. Ask what protective equipment is required and whether a suitable riding helmet is available or must be brought by the participant.

Trail riding may also involve roads, steep terrain, water crossings, changing weather or remote locations. The required level of experience should reflect the actual conditions.

Make sure your insurance covers horse riding and any specific activities involved, particularly trekking, jumping, competitions or long-distance riding where applicable.

Work exchange or commercial riding activity?

Some opportunities take place on private farms or non-profit projects, while others are connected with commercial ranches, riding schools, trekking centres or equestrian tourism businesses.

Regular stable work, exercising commercial horses, guiding paying customers or carrying out duties normally performed by employees may be considered employment under local labour or immigration rules even when accommodation or riding is provided instead of a salary.

Before travelling, check whether the proposed activities are permitted under your immigration status. Tourist or visitor entry does not automatically allow every form of unpaid equestrian work exchange.

For additional guidance, read Voluntouring’s information about safety and legality in volunteering and work exchanges and visas for volunteering abroad.
