What is a gathering? 🎪👥
A gathering is a temporary meeting where participation and shared experience are central. It may involve community living, workshops, discussions, shared meals, practical tasks, ceremonies, creative activities or informal learning. Gatherings vary widely, but participants are usually more actively involved than they would be as ordinary spectators at an event.
Gatherings, events and festivals
These formats can overlap, but they are not identical. Events is the broader category for temporary organised activities. Festivals usually have a defined cultural, artistic, musical or celebratory programme. Gatherings place greater emphasis on participation, community, exchange or temporarily creating something together.
A gathering may also include workshops or resemble a retreat, but these activities do not automatically make every workshop, retreat or festival a gathering.
How to use this page
Check the publication date, gathering dates and current availability before travelling. Confirm what participation involves, whether there are defined volunteer hours or shared community responsibilities, and what accommodation, meals, equipment, contributions or other costs are involved.
Some gatherings take place in temporary camps or remote natural areas. Ask about water, sanitation, weather conditions, transport, accessibility, fire restrictions, insurance and what participants are expected to bring. For informal or self-organised gatherings, current information may change quickly, so verify practical details through the organisers or appropriate community channels.
