Explore gardening volunteering opportunities involving vegetable gardens, orchards, community gardens, eco-projects, farms, intentional communities and other hands-on growing activities.

Activities may include planting, sowing, watering, weeding, composting, harvesting, preparing garden beds and general maintenance. Some projects may also introduce volunteers to organic gardening, permaculture or other approaches to growing food and caring for the land.

Some listings may be seasonal, archival or no longer active. Always check the publication date and confirm the current activities and conditions directly with the host before making travel plans.

How to use this page

Open the opportunity that interests you and read the complete announcement. Look for the contact details at the end of the listing to find the host’s website, email address or application procedure.

Before applying, confirm the gardening tasks, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, minimum stay and any fees, deposits or other financial arrangements directly with the host.

Some opportunities may be fair exchanges with no mandatory participant fee, while others may request a contribution or programme fee. If payment is required, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and the applicable payment, cancellation and refund conditions before making a commitment.

Voluntouring does not organise placements, select participants, arrange visas or mediate between volunteers and hosts. It does not process participant payments between travellers and host organisations. Publication on Voluntouring.org does not in itself constitute verification, endorsement or a recommendation of an opportunity.

Gardening exchange or agricultural work?

Helping with a community garden or household vegetable plot may be very different from carrying out regular productive work for a commercial farm, nursery or landscaping business.

If the activities involve fixed shifts, significant harvesting, commercial production or duties normally performed by paid workers, check whether the arrangement may be treated as employment under local labour and immigration rules.

Accommodation or meals do not automatically make productive agricultural work a volunteer activity.

Gardening safety

Gardening can involve tools, heavy lifting, repetitive work, insects, sun exposure and occasionally fertilisers or other products. Ask what equipment, training and protective measures are provided.

Volunteers should not handle pesticides or other potentially hazardous substances without appropriate information, protection and supervision.
