Reef conservation 🪸
Explore coral reef volunteering opportunities involving reef monitoring, marine research, coral restoration and environmental education. Projects may be based at marine conservation centres, research organisations or community initiatives working to protect reef ecosystems.
Some programmes involve scientific scuba diving and underwater surveys, while others offer shore-based activities or educational work with coastal communities. Requirements and participation costs vary between projects.
What is coral reef conservation? 🪸
Coral reefs are underwater ecosystems built largely by colonies of reef-forming corals. They provide habitats for many fish and other marine organisms. Reef conservation involves protecting these ecosystems, monitoring their condition and addressing threats such as pollution, warming seas and physical damage. Some projects also undertake specialised coral restoration. Learn more through the NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program.
Volunteering in reef conservation
Depending on the project, volunteers may assist with coral and fish surveys, underwater photography, recording scientific data, monitoring reef conditions or supporting supervised coral nurseries and restoration work. Other activities may include marine litter surveys and environmental education.
Coral restoration and underwater research require appropriate methods, equipment and supervision. Ask what training is provided and whether the work involves actual conservation activities rather than recreational diving alone.
How to use this page
Check publication dates and confirm current activities, diving qualifications, training, supervision, working hours, accommodation, meals, minimum stay and any participation fees directly with the organisation.
For underwater activities, ask about diving insurance, equipment, medical fitness requirements, emergency procedures and local marine protection rules. Do not touch or collect corals or other marine organisms without appropriate authorisation and supervision.
