Babysitting generally involves caring for children for limited or occasional periods. It is different from an au pair arrangement, which normally involves living with a host family and taking part in family life over a longer period.

Volunteers should not be given unnecessary unsupervised access to children, and family-based exchanges should not be used to replace professional childcare or other paid roles without an appropriate legal arrangement. Babysitting or au pair?
Babysitting usually refers to shorter or occasional childcare and does not necessarily involve living with the family. An au pair arrangement is normally longer-term and combines childcare with accommodation, meals and, where applicable, pocket money or another allowance.
Clarify whether the role includes school runs, meals, homework help, evening babysitting, overnight responsibility or household tasks. Terms such as “a little help” or “part of the family” should not replace a clear schedule and agreed responsibilities.
