Ayahuasca
Explore volunteer opportunities that support ayahuasca retreats and related community projects. This archive gathers hosts who request help with housekeeping, gardening, kitchen assistance, translation, or guest care around ceremonies. Roles may also include eco-building, trail work, permaculture, or communications. Always research legality and safety in each country and confirm responsibilities and time commitment with the host. Voluntouring is an information hub, not a booking agent. We do not endorse ceremonies or providers. Read each listing carefully and check reviews before you apply. If a project asks for a participation fee or requires more than 30 hours per week, make sure it fits your goals and budget. Use the contact details on each page to apply directly. New projects are added regularly, so check back for updates or join our Facebook groups.
What is ayahuasca?
Ayahuasca is a psychoactive tea from the western Amazon, brewed from the Banisteriopsis caapi vine together with DMT-containing leaves, often Psychotria viridis. The vineâs harmala alkaloids allow DMT to be active when swallowed. Ceremonies are usually guided at night for healing and community aims. Effects can begin within an hour and last four to six hours, with intense perceptions, strong emotions, introspection, and possible nausea or vomiting.
Important notes Ayahuasca is not risk-free. It can interact dangerously with medicines that affect serotonin, including many antidepressants, and it may worsen some heart conditions or mental health vulnerabilities. It is not recommended during pregnancy. Legal status differs by country since DMT is controlled in many places, while some regions allow specific religious use. Anyone considering a ceremony should check legality and safety, seek medical screening, and choose reputable organisers who respect local communities and ecosystems.
