Animal welfare is broader than simply feeding or handling animals. It includes physical health, appropriate living conditions, nutrition, behaviour, humane treatment and the animal’s overall quality of life.

What does animal welfare mean?

Animal welfare concerns how an animal is coping with the conditions in which it lives. Responsible care should consider appropriate food and water, health, shelter, space, opportunities for species-appropriate behaviour, social needs where relevant and protection from unnecessary pain, fear or distress.

The appropriate standards depend on the species and context. A domestic animal shelter, wildlife rehabilitation centre, horse rescue and farm-animal sanctuary may therefore have very different welfare requirements.

An organisation describing itself as a rescue, sanctuary or welfare project is not automatically evidence of good practice. Volunteers should look at the actual conditions, policies and treatment of animals.

Possible volunteer activities

Depending on the project, participants may help with:

preparing food and water;
cleaning appropriate animal areas;
walking, grooming or socialising suitable animals;
providing enrichment under supervision;
maintaining shelters, enclosures and facilities;
supporting adoption or fostering programmes;
administration, fundraising or communication;
education and community outreach;
supporting qualified animal-care or veterinary staff.

The listing should explain which activities are actually expected. Direct interaction with animals should not be assumed to be part of every opportunity.

Evaluating an animal welfare project

Before joining, ask where the animals come from, what normally happens to them afterwards and what veterinary support is available.

Depending on the project, useful questions may concern adoption, fostering, rehabilitation, release, long-term care, breeding, sale or transfer of animals and visitor interactions.

For wildlife projects, ask whether relevant permits are held and how unnecessary human contact is minimised. Close interaction, handling, performances or staged photographs primarily offered for visitor entertainment should not automatically be treated as conservation or responsible animal welfare activities.

Veterinary roles and professional boundaries

Diagnosis, surgery, medication, invasive procedures and other veterinary activities should remain with appropriately qualified and authorised professionals.

Volunteers should not perform veterinary procedures simply because an organisation lacks staff. Students or qualified professionals considering a clinical role should confirm supervision, local professional requirements, permitted activities and appropriate insurance before participating.

any fees, deposits or other financial conditions.

Some opportunities may have no mandatory participant fee, while others may request a contribution or programme fee. If payment is required, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and the applicable payment, cancellation and refund conditions before making a commitment.

Health and personal safety

Working with animals can involve bites, scratches, kicks, allergies, parasites and zoonotic diseases. Ask about hygiene procedures, protective equipment, recommended vaccinations and what training is provided before direct animal handling.

Make sure your insurance covers the species and activities involved, particularly work with large animals, wildlife or veterinary environments.
