It does not process participant payments between volunteers and host organisations. Visas and volunteering in South Africa
Entry and immigration requirements depend on your nationality, length of stay and planned activities. South African immigration law provides for visitor visas that can cover certain voluntary or charitable activities, while employment and other forms of work may require separate authorisation.
Do not assume that ordinary tourist entry or an Electronic Travel Authorisation automatically covers every volunteering or work-exchange arrangement. Ask the host which immigration status applies to your activities and verify it independently through the South African Department of Home Affairs.
Wildlife and conservation projects
If an opportunity involves wildlife, research the organisation carefully and ask about permits, conservation objectives, animal welfare policies and professional supervision.
Be cautious with projects based primarily on direct tourist interaction with captive wildlife, including cub petting, walking with predators or staged photographs. Volunteers should not perform veterinary procedures or handle dangerous animals beyond their qualifications and training.
Current travel considerations
South Africa has a high rate of violent crime, and risks can vary considerably between neighbourhoods, transport routes and rural areas. Confirm safe transport arrangements with the host, particularly for airport transfers, isolated projects and travel after dark.
