Extinction Rebellion, often shortened to XR, is an international climate movement that began in the United Kingdom in 2018. It calls for urgent action on climate change, biodiversity loss and ecological breakdown. The movement is known for its hourglass symbol, colourful flags, public demonstrations and nonviolent civil disobedience. Its actions are sometimes controversial, especially when they disrupt traffic or public space, but they have helped keep climate urgency in public debate.
