Built in the 12th century by Emperor Suryavarman II, the temple complex represents the pinnacle of Khmer architecture and symbolizes Mount Meru, the divine home of the gods in Hindu cosmology. It is renowned for its detailed bas-reliefs depicting epic scenes from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, as well as countless carvings of celestial figures such as apsaras and devatas.
In recent years, Angkor Wat has been at the center of major archaeological discoveries.
In April 2020, during excavations near the southwest corner of the main structure, around 300 fragments of Buddha statues were uncovered. Though fragmented, these artifacts offer new insight into the religious practices and sculptural art of the period.
Back in December 2015, a team from the University of Sydney used LiDAR technology to reveal previously unknown underground structures within the Angkor Wat complex. These included buried towers and a large wooden-fortified structure whose purpose remains unclear. The findings suggest the temple area may have once hosted a much larger residential community than previously believed.
More recently, in November 2024, Cambodian archaeologists unearthed twelve sandstone statues near the northern gate of the Royal Palace in Angkor Thom. These “gate guardian” figures, dating back to the 11th century, were found in remarkably good condition.
Conservation and research efforts continue, with the goal of preserving and deepening our understanding of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
