UNESCO World Heritage 🏛️
Explore UNESCO World Heritage volunteering and related opportunities involving cultural heritage preservation, environmental conservation, education and community participation at heritage sites around the world.
Some projects are part of the official World Heritage Volunteers initiative, while others are organised independently by local associations or institutions. Being located near a UNESCO World Heritage Site does not automatically mean that a project is affiliated with UNESCO or involved in heritage conservation.
What are UNESCO World Heritage Volunteers? 🏛️🌍
The World Heritage Volunteers (WHV) initiative was launched in 2008 within UNESCO’s World Heritage Education Programme. It brings together young volunteers, local communities and organisations through action camps connected with World Heritage Sites or locations on national Tentative Lists. Projects are selected within the UNESCO programme but organised by participating associations and institutions. UNESCO does not recruit individual volunteers directly. Learn more from the official World Heritage Volunteers website.
Volunteering in World Heritage conservation
Depending on the project, participants may help with environmental monitoring, site maintenance, awareness campaigns, educational activities, community events or practical heritage preservation under appropriate supervision. Specialist restoration work may require qualifications and official authorisation.
For information about selected projects, visit the World Heritage Volunteers 2026 campaign, which includes projects in different countries and contact information for the organising bodies.
