Medical student volunteer in Ghana

Medical volunteer in Ghana giving a vaccination to a baby while the mother holds the child during a community health outreach clinic.

Esther is a medical student from the University of Leeds who spent three weeks in Ghana with Theresaโ€™s organisation in Senya Beraku. Theresa welcomed her at the airport, gave her a comfortable room, and cooked three meals a day, introducing her to local dishes like jollof, red red and fresh mangoes. For her project on caring for a disabled child, Esther carried out and translated several interviews. She also helped in the baby clinic weighing children, shadowed doctors and nurses, joined home visits and community outreach, and learned a lot about Ghanaโ€™s health system. On weekends she travelled, feeling safe thanks to Theresaโ€™s support. She says she gained valuable experience and felt part of the family.
