What is youth empowerment? ✊🧑🎓
Youth empowerment generally involves creating opportunities for young people to develop knowledge and skills, express their views, exercise greater agency and participate meaningfully in decisions and activities that affect them. Programmes may focus on education, leadership, civic engagement, employment skills, creativity or community participation.
Volunteering with youth empowerment projects
Volunteer activities may include supporting workshops, language or digital-skills programmes, creative activities, youth events, communications or supervised mentoring. Some projects are led directly by young people, while others are run by schools, associations, NGOs or community organisations.
When activities involve children or adolescents, ask about supervision, safeguarding procedures, consent and clear role boundaries. Volunteers should not replace qualified educators, counsellors, social workers or other trained staff and should not be given inappropriate unsupervised responsibility for minors.
