What does a volunteer teaching assistant do? 👨🏽🏫

Unlike an independent teacher, a teaching assistant should not be expected to manage a class, design a curriculum or assess students without appropriate training and educational oversight.

Volunteer teaching assistants should complement the work of local educators rather than replace qualified teachers or other permanent staff. The role and length of stay should fit the learners’ needs and the school’s existing programme.
Safeguarding and volunteering with children
For projects involving children, ask about the organisation’s child protection policy, volunteer screening, reference or background checks, training and day-to-day supervision. Volunteers should not have unsupervised responsibility for children.
