What is sustainable tourism? 🌍🌱
Sustainable tourism considers the current and future environmental, social and economic impacts of tourism while taking into account the needs of visitors, tourism businesses, the environment and host communities. It includes approaches to protecting natural and cultural heritage, managing resources and supporting fair economic benefits for local people. Volunteering in sustainable tourism projects
Depending on the host, activities may include supporting local guides, developing visitor information, helping with cultural events, environmental education, communications or practical work at tourism facilities. Some organisations also seek assistance with research, fundraising or community tourism initiatives.
A tourism business is not automatically sustainable because it is small, locally owned or located in a natural area. If sustainability is important to you, ask about actual practices involving waste, water, energy, working conditions, cultural heritage and benefits for the local community.
