Explore songwriting volunteer opportunities where musicians, songwriters and creative volunteers can contribute to music education, collaborative composition, workshops and community arts projects.
Songwriting activities may take place in music schools, cultural centres, community organisations or creative programmes. Some projects look for experienced songwriters, while others involve group activities where participants develop lyrics, melodies or original songs together.
What is songwriting? 🎼✍️
Songwriting is the process of creating songs, including lyrics, melodies, chord progressions and musical arrangements. Songs can be written individually or collaboratively, with or without instruments or digital music software. Songwriting overlaps with music composition, but generally focuses on creating songs rather than instrumental music alone.
Songwriting and volunteering
Depending on the project, volunteers may teach songwriting techniques, facilitate creative workshops, help participants develop original songs or contribute their own composition skills to a collaborative music programme.
For example, Damian Soul Music School in Tanzania has listed songwriting and singing among the subjects for which volunteer teachers are sought. This is an older announcement, so its current availability requires confirmation.
Not every music-related opportunity involves songwriting. Performing existing songs, singing together or helping at a music festival are different activities unless creating original music is genuinely part of the volunteer role.
How to use this page
