Responsible travel
Explore responsible travel guides, stories, volunteering experiences and practical information about the effects tourism can have on people, animals, communities and the environment.
Responsible travel is not a particular way of travelling or a label reserved for eco-lodges, volunteer projects or alternative travellers. It involves considering the consequences of our choices and recognising that visitors, businesses, governments and local communities all have a role in shaping tourism.
What is responsible travel? 🌍
Responsible travel means taking account of the social, economic, cultural and environmental consequences of tourism. It includes respecting local communities, supporting fair working conditions, protecting natural and cultural heritage and reducing unnecessary harm. These principles are reflected in the Cape Town Declaration on Responsible Tourism.
Travel choices and local communities
Tourism can create jobs and support local businesses, but it can also place pressure on housing, water, public spaces and natural areas. Before choosing accommodation, tours or activities, consider where your money goes, how workers are treated and whether residents have a say in decisions affecting their communities.
Travelling slowly, staying with local hosts or choosing an alternative form of transport can be useful in some circumstances, but none of these choices automatically makes a journey responsible. A small guesthouse or volunteer project can have problems just as a conventional hotel or organised tour can adopt better practices.
Responsible travel and volunteering
Volunteering abroad can be part of responsible travel, but good intentions alone are not enough. Before applying, ask whether the project responds to genuine local needs, whether volunteers receive suitable supervision, whether local paid jobs could be affected and how any participation fees or donations are used.
Activities involving children, vulnerable people or animals deserve particular attention. Read our guides to safer alternatives when volunteering with children and evaluating animal sanctuaries.
