What is an animal rescue centre?

An animal rescue centre generally receives animals that have been abandoned, injured, confiscated, neglected or otherwise need temporary or long-term care.

Depending on the organisation, the aim may be rehabilitation and release, adoption into suitable homes or permanent care when release or adoption is not possible.

The terms rescue centre, shelter, refuge and sanctuary are sometimes used differently between countries and organisations. A project describing itself as a rescue centre is not automatically proof of its legal status, welfare standards or conservation value.

Possible volunteer activities

Depending on the project, participants may help with:

preparing food and water;
cleaning appropriate animal areas;
general animal-care routines;
walking or socialising suitable domestic animals;
maintaining enclosures and facilities;
laundry, cleaning and practical support;
gardening or site maintenance;
administration, fundraising or communication;
education and community outreach.

The exact role should be explained before arrival. Volunteers should not assume that direct handling of animals will be part of the experience.

Animal welfare and responsible projects

Before joining, ask how animals arrive at the centre, what happens to them afterwards and what veterinary support is available. For domestic animals, this may include adoption, fostering or long-term care. For wildlife, rehabilitation and release should be considered where appropriate and legally possible.

If the project works with wild animals, ask whether relevant permits are held, how unnecessary human contact is minimised and whether breeding, sale, transfers or visitor interactions form part of the operation.

Wildlife encounters designed mainly for entertainment, photography or unnecessary close contact should not automatically be treated as conservation or rescue activities.

Veterinary roles and animal handling

Medical treatment, diagnosis, surgery, medication and other veterinary procedures should remain with appropriately qualified and authorised professionals.

Volunteers should not perform veterinary tasks simply because a project lacks staff. Even routine animal handling may require training, supervision and knowledge of the species involved.

Ask whether the animals may bite, scratch, kick or carry zoonotic diseases and what vaccinations, protective equipment or hygiene procedures are recommended.
