What is an olive grove? 🫒
An olive grove is an area of land where olive trees are grown for olives, olive oil or both. Grove care can continue throughout the year and may include pruning, soil and vegetation management, irrigation, terrace maintenance and caring for young or established trees. Olive harvesting is only one seasonal part of this wider cycle.
Olive grove work and harvest season
The activities depend on the season and the way each property is managed. Some projects focus on restoring neglected groves, clearing vegetation or maintaining terraces, while others include harvesting and preparing olives for transport to a mill. Do not assume that an olive-grove opportunity includes olive picking during every stay.
Work may involve uneven terrain, ladders, pruning tools or agricultural equipment. Ask what tasks are expected and what instruction, supervision and protective equipment are provided. Volunteers should not operate unfamiliar machinery or undertake technical pruning or structural work beyond their experience.
