Explore monkey sanctuary volunteering and other projects involving the care, rescue, rehabilitation or conservation of monkeys. Opportunities may be based at wildlife sanctuaries, rescue centres, rehabilitation projects or organisations caring for animals affected by trafficking, captivity, injury or habitat loss.
Volunteer activities can include preparing food, cleaning and maintaining enclosures, creating enrichment, gardening, maintenance, education or other practical support. Roles involving direct animal care may require additional training and supervision.
What is a monkey? 🐒
Monkeys are primates found naturally in parts of Africa, Asia and the Americas. They include many different species, from vervet and capuchin monkeys to macaques and spider monkeys. All monkeys are primates, but not all primates are monkeys: apes, lemurs and several other groups also belong to the primate order.
Animal welfare and volunteer contact
Before joining a monkey sanctuary or rehabilitation project, ask how animals arrived at the centre, what the long-term welfare or rehabilitation goals are, how veterinary care is provided and what contact volunteers are permitted to have with the animals.
Close contact with wild primates is not automatically a benefit for either volunteers or animals. Rehabilitation programmes may deliberately restrict touching, handling or other human interaction, while specialised care for injured or orphaned animals should take place under appropriate supervision.
