Paid job, stipend or pocket money?

Not every opportunity that provides money is a conventional paid job. Voluntouring uses different tags to help distinguish between different types of arrangements.

Paid jobs should offer clearly described financial compensation for work. A stipend may be a fixed weekly or monthly allowance connected to a programme or position. Pocket money is generally a modest personal allowance provided within a volunteering programme and should not be confused with wages.

Profit sharing, commissions, tips and expense reimbursements are also different from a guaranteed salary. Always ask the organisation to explain clearly how compensation is calculated and what happens if expected income is lower than anticipated.

Work permits and legal employment

Being allowed to visit a country does not automatically mean that you are allowed to work there. An employer should not encourage you to work illegally or describe a regular paid position as “volunteering” simply to avoid employment, tax or immigration requirements.

Before travelling, check the official immigration and employment information for the destination country and confirm with the employer which permits or registrations are required for your specific position.

Before accepting a job abroad

Be cautious if an employer refuses to provide basic information about pay, working hours, accommodation deductions or legal employment status. Do not send large deposits or recruitment payments simply to secure a job unless you have independently verified why the payment is required and who is receiving it.
