These opportunities often suit people who are flexible and comfortable helping with different tasks rather than specialising in one activity. Some projects may not require previous experience, while others may have specific practical, physical or language requirements.

Open the opportunity that interests you and read the complete announcement. Look for the contact details at the end of the listing to find the host’s website, email address or application procedure.

Before applying, confirm the expected tasks, weekly hours, days off, accommodation, meals, minimum stay and any fees, deposits or other financial arrangements directly with the host.

Some opportunities may be fair exchanges with no mandatory participant fee, while others may request a contribution or programme fee. If payment is required, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and the applicable payment, cancellation and refund conditions before making a commitment.

What does “general help” mean?

The term can cover several small tasks rather than one specialised role. Depending on the project, general help may include:

cleaning and organising shared spaces;
gardening and basic outdoor work;
simple maintenance or DIY tasks;
help with meals or communal activities;
basic hospitality or guest support;
other everyday tasks agreed with the host.

The description should be specific enough for participants to understand what they will actually be doing. “General help” should not be used to justify unlimited duties or major changes to the agreed role after arrival.

Fair exchange or regular work?

Helping with everyday chores in a community or household can be different from covering regular operational shifts for a hostel, guesthouse, farm or other commercial activity.

If the role includes fixed reception shifts, housekeeping, food service or other productive duties that would normally be performed by paid staff, check whether the arrangement may be treated as employment under local labour and immigration rules.

Accommodation or meals do not automatically make regular productive work a volunteer activity.
