EVS โ European Voluntary Service projects.
The European Voluntary Service (EVS) is an exciting program under the Erasmus+ initiative, a component of the European Union’s drive to encourage youth mobility, participation, and informal learning. The EVS aims to foster unity, mutual understanding, and a sense of community among young people across Europe by supporting volunteer work abroad.
Primarily intended for individuals between 17 and 30 years old, this program allows participants to contribute to projects in areas such as culture, youth, sports, social care, cultural heritage, and the environment, typically ranging from two to twelve months. These projects are designed to offer mutual benefits, allowing volunteers to acquire new skills, experiences, and knowledge while contributing to the host communityโs development.
Benefits of EVS
Volunteers participating in the EVS usually receive support covering their living, travel, and accommodation expenses, ensuring that financial constraints don’t hinder participation. This inclusionary approach is pivotal, promoting accessibility to individuals from varied socioeconomic backgrounds. Moreover, participants often receive a small allowance for personal expenses, fostering a sense of independence.
By facilitating cross-cultural encounters and dialogues, the EVS enriches the perspectives of the youth, cultivating tolerance, solidarity, and a shared European identity. These interactions encourage the dissemination of diverse cultures, traditions, and languages, thereby building bridges between communities and nurturing a harmonious European society.
The Youthpass
The learning and growth experienced through the EVS are recognized through the Youthpass, a certificate that validates the non-formal and informal learning acquired during the volunteering period. This acknowledgment of skills and competencies can be valuable for the participants’ future educational and professional pursuits.
An EVS project involves a triangular partnership:
- a volunteer,
- a sending organization,
- and a host organization.
One of the countries involved in a project must be an EU Member State or an accession country.
EVS acronym has now been substituted with ESC (European Solidarity Corps)
