What can education volunteering involve?

Depending on the project, participants may be invited to help with:

language conversation and informal language practice;
homework support and tutoring;
classroom assistance under the supervision of teachers;
arts, music, sports or creative activities;
adult education or literacy programmes;
educational workshops and community activities;
preparing learning materials;
administrative or communication support for education projects.

The listing should explain exactly what the participant is expected to do. A short-term volunteer should not automatically be placed in charge of a classroom, provide professional counselling or replace qualified local teachers and staff.

Safeguarding and volunteering with children

Many education projects involve children or young people. Appropriate safeguarding procedures, supervision and clear role boundaries are therefore essential.

Ask whether the organisation has a safeguarding policy, how volunteers are supervised and whether background checks or references are required. Volunteers should not be given unnecessary unsupervised one-to-one access to children.

Short-term participation should also be designed around the needs of learners rather than primarily around the visitor’s experience. Frequent turnover of unfamiliar adults can be disruptive, especially in projects involving vulnerable children.

Qualifications and professional boundaries

Formal teaching, special education, counselling, therapy and other professional roles may require recognised qualifications, local authorisation or specific experience.

If a project expects you to teach independently, prepare a formal curriculum, assess students or provide specialist support, ask what qualifications are required and who is responsible for professional supervision.

Volunteers should not present themselves as qualified teachers, counsellors or other professionals unless they hold the appropriate credentials for the role.

required qualifications or experience;

Some opportunities may have no mandatory participant fee, while others may request a contribution or programme fee. If payment is required, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and the applicable payment, cancellation and refund conditions before making a commitment.

A participant fee does not automatically make an education programme more or less responsible, effective or appropriate.
