Earthbag homes – volunteer projects section – Would you like to learn how to build a house using only natural, eco-friendly materials in a cost-effective way? Here’s a quick look at Earthbag Structures!
What is an Earthbag Structure?
An Earthbag home is an emerging architectural design that resembles “military forts” built from sandbags or adobe-style structures in which the Native Americans sought shelter in desert areas.
Earthbag structures start with polypropylene bags (or other inexpensive materials) which people usually fill with dirt, gravel or other natural resources that are not subject to decomposition. Depending on the materials that one chooses to compose the structure, the composition either insulates or provides thermal mass.
Once the structure is complete, the builders proceed by covering the exterior with plaster or stucco to reinforce its durability, weatherproof and camouflage its interior to resemble conventional architectural and design structures.
Why should I build an Earthbag Structure?
Earthbag Structures is not only environmentally friendly, but it is also economical. Moreover, its design helps to protect the structure against natural disasters and calamities. Other benefits are:
- Reduction of material costs because natural resources are nearby by reducing the energy commonly associated with building and transporting conventional elements and protecting diminishing forests.
- Less expensive per square metre than conventional structures.
- They offer long-term savings on heating and cooling due to their natural ability to insulate and provide thermal mass.
- Due to their composition, these structures have been proven to protect against floods, earthquakes, high winds, fires and extreme temperatures.
Noteโ
When considering the construction of an Earthbag storage facility or other structure, it is important to comply with local rules and regulations. As they are becoming more popular, more cities, banks and insurance companies are supporting those who build them.
In short
Earthbag Structures is a breathable architectural concept and design that recognises the need to incorporate more green practices and helps environmentalists further reduce their carbon footprint. Its affordability, environmental awareness and tensile strength add to the popularity of Earth Structures.
