This tag is primarily for opportunities where the host explicitly addresses the participation of disabled volunteers, accessibility or reasonable adjustments. A project should not receive this tag simply because volunteers work with disabled people. Projects involving disability support may be relevant for other reasons, but that does not automatically mean they are accessible to disabled volunteers.
Accessibility varies between projects
Ask specific questions that matter to you, such as steps, door widths, bathrooms, sleeping arrangements, terrain, transport, working surfaces, sensory environment, communication, internet access and the physical demands of the tasks. A host saying that disabled volunteers are “welcome” does not necessarily mean that every part of the site or every activity is accessible.
Share only the personal information needed to discuss the role and any adjustments. Hosts should describe practical conditions clearly rather than asking applicants for unnecessary medical details.
Roles involving disabled people
Some projects in the wider Voluntouring archive involve disability organisations, community activities or support services. Where volunteers work directly with disabled or otherwise vulnerable people, responsibilities should be clearly defined and appropriately supervised. Short-term volunteers should not replace trained staff or provide therapy, clinical services, personal care or unsupervised one-to-one support unless they have the qualifications, authorisation and supervision required for the role.
