Explore contact improvisation volunteer opportunities and exchanges where Contact Improvisation forms a genuine part of the programme, workshops, artistic activities or community experience.
This is a specialised dance tag. It may include festivals, retreat centres, artistic residencies and other projects where volunteers can practise, participate in or sometimes facilitate Contact Improvisation. The practice should be clearly mentioned rather than assumed simply because a project offers dance or movement activities.
What is contact improvisation? 🤝💃
Contact Improvisation is an improvised dance practice in which movement develops through physical contact between dancers and their changing relationship with weight, balance, gravity and momentum. The practice can range from quiet floor-based movement to more athletic partnering, lifts and weight sharing. It developed in the United States in the early 1970s and is now practised internationally in workshops, classes, performances and informal sessions often known as jams.
Contact, consent and experience
Contact Improvisation involves close physical interaction, so communication and consent are important. Participants should be able to choose whether to join, change partners or stop an interaction without pressure. More athletic forms can involve weight sharing, falling, rolling and lifting, so beginners should understand what instruction and supervision are available.
If volunteers are expected to lead workshops rather than simply participate, confirm what teaching or facilitation experience the host requires and who is responsible for the safety of participants.
