Some opportunities may be fair exchanges with no mandatory participant fee, while others may request a contribution or programme fee. If payment is required, ask for the exact amount, what it covers and the applicable payment, cancellation and refund conditions before making a commitment.

Shared chores or housekeeping work?

Routine cleaning of shared kitchens, bedrooms or communal areas can be a normal part of living together in a volunteer exchange. This is different from being responsible for regular housekeeping shifts that support the daily operation of a commercial accommodation business.

If the role involves cleaning guest rooms, bathrooms, laundry or other areas on a fixed schedule at a hostel, hotel, guesthouse or similar business, ask whether the arrangement may be treated as employment under local labour and immigration rules.

Accommodation or meals do not automatically make regular productive work a volunteer activity.

Cleaning tasks and safety

Cleaning duties may include:

• keeping shared rooms and common areas tidy;
• cleaning kitchens, bathrooms or accommodation spaces;
• laundry and basic housekeeping;
• cleaning animal shelters, barns or farm areas;
• general organisation and maintenance of shared spaces.

Ask what cleaning products, protective equipment and training are provided. Volunteers should not handle hazardous chemicals, biological waste or other high-risk materials without appropriate instructions and protection.
