Camels 🐪
Explore volunteering and work exchangeA work exchange is an arrangement in which a traveller contributes an agreed amount of help to a host in return for benefits such as accommodation, meals or learning opportunities. Conditions vary by host. opportunities where camels are genuinely part of the farm, animal-care setting, desert camp or other host activity. Depending on the project, volunteers may encounter camels alongside other farm animals or in places connected with desert tourism and traditional livelihoods.
The role of volunteers varies considerably. Some hosts may need practical help with feeding, cleaning or general animal care, while in other projects camels may be connected with tourism rather than the volunteer’s daily tasks. Read each listing carefully to understand what participation actually involves.
Camel or dromedary? 🐪
A dromedary is a camel with one hump, while Bactrian camels have two. Dromedaries are the type most commonly associated with desert regions of North Africa and Western Asia, although this page may include different camel species and settings.
Animal welfare and camel-related activities
If volunteers will handle or care for camels, ask about feeding, water, shelter, supervision, veterinary care and the specific tasks expected. Large animals can be unpredictable, so volunteers should receive appropriate instructions and should not undertake handling or medical procedures beyond their experience.
Where camel rides, safaris or tourist activities are involved, consider how the animals are housed, handled, rested and worked, and ask about working hours, loads and welfare practices. For additional context, see Animals are not attractions: a voluntourist’s perspective.
