Archaeology studies past human activity through material remains. Volunteer projects may involve fieldwork, recording, finds processing, public archaeology or heritage activities, depending on the organisation and the participant’s experience.
Volunteering in archaeology
Archaeological excavation is not simply digging for interesting objects. Sites, finds and their archaeological context need to be recorded carefully, and fieldwork should take place with appropriate supervision and according to local legal and professional requirements.
Ask what training is provided and which tasks volunteers may undertake. Specialist activities, work with human remains, artefact conservation or professional research may require relevant qualifications or authorisation.
