Volunteering across the Americas

Opportunities across the Americas can differ considerably according to country, location and type of host.

Listings may involve:

NGOs and non-profit organisations;
community and social projects;
farms, ranches and permaculture projects;
environmental conservation;
wildlife and animal care;
education and cultural exchange;
hostels, guesthouses and hospitality exchanges;
intentional communities and eco-projects;
house and pet sitting;
seasonal or paid roles where clearly identified;
other independent or structured volunteering programmes.

These are possible types of opportunities rather than a guarantee that all of them are currently available in every country. Browse the regional and country archives to see what has actually been published.

Open the opportunity that interests you and read the complete announcement. Check the publication or latest update date first, because host availability, project activities and exchange conditions can change.

Look for the contact details or application instructions in the individual listing. Depending on the publication, you may find an official website, email address, social media page or application procedure, or instructions for requesting protected host contact information through Voluntouring.org.

Before applying, confirm:

the exact activities;
weekly hours and days off;
minimum stay;
accommodation;
meals;
local transport;
training and supervision;
insurance requirements;
any fees, deposits, allowances or other financial arrangements;
visa or immigration requirements for your nationality and activities.

Free, fee-based and paid opportunities

There is no single financial model for volunteering across the Americas.

Some opportunities are fair exchanges where no mandatory participant fee is charged and food and accommodation are included. Others may provide accommodation only, request a contribution or programme fee, provide pocket money or offer paid work.

Do not assume that a project is free or fee-based because of the country or economic conditions of the destination. Check the specific arrangement described by the host.

If payment is required, ask for the exact amount, what it covers, who receives it and what cancellation or refund conditions apply before making a commitment.

Voluntouring does not process participant payments between travellers and host organisations.

Choosing an opportunity responsibly

The fact that an activity is described as volunteering does not automatically mean that it creates a positive impact or represents a fair exchange.

Consider whether the activities match your experience, whether suitable supervision is provided and whether international volunteers complement rather than unnecessarily replace local workers.

Projects involving children, healthcare, vulnerable people, wildlife, construction or other specialist activities require particularly clear boundaries, appropriate supervision and, where relevant, professional qualifications.

Publication on Voluntouring.org does not itself constitute verification, endorsement or certification of an organisation or opportunity.

Visas and immigration

There is no single visa rule for volunteering across the Americas. Entry and immigration requirements differ between countries and territories and can also depend on nationality, length of stay, host type and the activities performed.

Do not assume that tourism or visa-free entry automatically permits every form of volunteering, farm help, hostel work, childcare, teaching or work exchange. Even unpaid activities can be treated as work under some immigration systems.

A host may or may not be able to provide supporting documents or invitation letters depending on the programme and local rules. There is no general rule preventing organisations from issuing them.

Check current requirements directly with the relevant immigration authority, embassy or consulate before travelling.

Travel insurance

Insurance requirements vary between destinations, programmes and activities.

If you purchase travel insurance, check that the policy covers the countries and territories you plan to visit, the complete duration of your trip and the activities you expect to undertake.

Farm work, construction, animal handling, diving, trekking, motorcycles, paid employment and travel to areas affected by official warnings can be subject to exclusions or special conditions.

Safety varies by destination

The Americas cover a very large and diverse geographical area, so broad statements about safety are rarely useful.

Conditions can differ not only between countries but also between states, provinces, cities and rural regions within the same country.

Check current official travel advice for the precise destination of the project, particularly when an opportunity is in a remote area or a region affected by natural disasters, political instability, crime or other rapidly changing conditions.

An older positive volunteer experience should not be treated as proof that current travel conditions remain the same.

North America
