Check whether the opportunity is still active

How to evaluate an opportunity

Before agreeing to volunteer, ask the host or organisation for clear information about:

• the exact project location;
• the activities volunteers actually perform;
• weekly hours and regular days off;
• training and supervision;
• accommodation and sleeping arrangements;
• meals and drinking water;
• local transport and airport or bus connections;
• minimum and maximum stay;
• language requirements;
• health and vaccination considerations;
• insurance requirements;
• any fees, deposits or mandatory contributions;
• visa or immigration requirements for the proposed activities.

Conditions can differ substantially between a local cultural exchange, an NGO programme and a professionally structured humanitarian placement.

Fees, food and accommodation

Some volunteer opportunities may provide accommodation, meals or both without charging a mandatory programme fee. Other organisations may request a contribution towards accommodation, food, supervision, local transport or project activities.

If payment is required, ask for the exact amount, what it covers, whether additional mandatory costs exist and what cancellation or refund conditions apply.

A participant fee does not automatically make an organisation responsible or irresponsible. What matters is whether the financial arrangement, activities and use of volunteers are transparent and appropriate.

Volunteering with NGOs and communities

Many international volunteering opportunities in Mozambique may involve NGOs, associations or community-based organisations. Before participating, try to understand what role the organisation plays locally and whether the activities requested from international volunteers respond to a genuine need.

Short-term visitors should be particularly cautious about roles that require professional skills, extensive responsibility or access to vulnerable people.

Volunteers should complement local knowledge and capacity rather than replace jobs that could reasonably be performed by local workers.

Children and vulnerable people

Projects involving children, schools, healthcare or vulnerable communities require additional care. Ask what safeguarding procedures, supervision and role boundaries are in place.

International volunteers should not receive inappropriate unsupervised access to children or be assigned teaching, medical, counselling or other specialist responsibilities simply because they are visitors from abroad.

Travel safety in Mozambique

Security conditions are not the same throughout the country. Northern Mozambique has experienced armed attacks and terrorism, particularly in and around Cabo Delgado, with additional risks affecting parts of neighbouring provinces.

Official travel advisories do not always draw exactly the same geographical boundaries, so check the most recent information before travelling:

If an organisation is located in or requires travel through an area covered by an official warning, carefully reconsider the placement and check whether your travel insurance remains valid.

Medical facilities can also be limited, particularly outside major urban areas. Ask how the host handles emergencies, identify the nearest suitable medical facility and make sure your insurance provides appropriate medical and evacuation coverage.

Visas and immigration

Do not assume that tourist entry automatically permits every form of volunteering, NGO work or work exchange.

Mozambique’s official immigration portal distinguishes between different purposes of travel. It also provides a specific Humanitarian Assistance Visa for certain invited non-profit humanitarian activities connected with officially declared emergencies or public calamities.

That category should not be assumed to cover every ordinary volunteer or cultural exchange. The correct immigration status depends on what you will actually do, the organisation involved, the duration of your stay and your nationality.
