The Skyros Island Horse Trust offers a unique volunteer experience on the Greek island of Skyros, working to protect and preserve the endangered Skyrian horse. Volunteers become part of the daily routine, helping with morning and evening field maintenance, feeding, grooming, stable care, and sometimes training activities like riding or halter work depending on experience. Days start early, usually around 7:30 AM, and include a mix of hands-on tasks and downtime, with meals and breaks throughout. There’s typically one and a half days off per week to explore the island or relax.
Accommodation is simple but functional, with a shared volunteer room including beds, a shower, toilet, and kitchenette. If the room is full, tents are provided with access to the same facilities. The Trust provides breakfast supplies and one hot meal per day. Volunteers handle their own dinners or can chip in for shared provisions.
This opportunity is ideal for people who are self-motivated, open to rural living, physically fit, and either experienced with horses or willing to learn. It can be physically demanding but deeply rewarding, especially for those passionate about animals and conservation
