Volunteering medical and educational programs in Uganda

Become a childcare volunteer. If you love working with children and are happy to provide support wherever your help is most needed, you will be well-suited to this project. As a volunteer on this project, you will work within daycare centres, nursery schools, children’s homes and kindergartens, assisting local staff in the day-to-day running of these centres so they can operate effectively.

Activities vary across the different centres. Typical tasks include:

• Bathing
• Feeding
• Changing diapers for babies
• Educational activities
• Basic teaching of English, maths, health and hygiene, reading and writing

Other activities can include play therapy and games, cleaning, reading stories, dancing, singing, arts and crafts, as well as helping with feeding and daily chores.

Do I need to have qualifications?

As you will be volunteering alongside local placement staff, you do not need to have previous childcare experience to participate in this project. However, high energy levels and a willingness to help out wherever your help is most needed are essential.

6 hours of help per day.

6 days per week, with 1 day off.

This is a structured volunteer program with around 36 hours of help per week.

Diet and nutrition information

Volunteers are provided with three meals per day (breakfast, lunch and dinner), prepared by an on-site local cook. If you wish to snack or eat outside of mealtimes, this will be at your own cost and there are local shops within the villages where you can purchase snacks.

Breakfast generally includes tea, eggs, bread and fruit. For lunch and dinner there is a revolving menu of local dishes, which include typical Ugandan stews (beef, chicken, pork, goat, fish and vegetable), beans, rice, chapatti, groundnuts and vegetables. Starchy foods such as white bread, white rice, pasta, potatoes, sweet potatoes, matoke (boiled green bananas) and cassava are dietary staples. The tropical climate of Uganda also offers a healthy choice of seasonal fruits, including bananas, watermelon, papayas, mangos, jackfruit and pineapples. Bottled drinking water is readily available in Uganda and volunteers should budget approximately 5 USD per week for this.

If you have any special dietary requirements, please let the hosts know well in advance of your program so the local team can make arrangements. Please keep in mind that food will not be exactly the same as at home. The hosts will do their best to take care of you, but as a volunteer there is a need to be flexible.

Fees transparency, volunteer program costs

This is a paid volunteer program with the following fees in GBP (British pounds):

• 1 week: £200
• 2 weeks: £300
• 3 weeks: £400
• 4 weeks: £500
• 5 weeks: £600
• 8 weeks: £900
• 9 weeks: £1000
• 10 weeks: £1100
• 11 weeks: £1070
• 12 weeks: £1170

You can volunteer for up to 24 weeks, and each additional week costs
£100.

To convert these prices to your local currency, please use the current exchange rate.
All programs attract a registration fee of £100 on top of the program fee.
A 5% international banking fee is added at the point of payment.

Volunteers’ program benefits

Volunteers are able to leave their footsteps behind as they help out in the community. The hosts offer:

Volunteers are also able to learn a lot from African culture. Many volunteers make new friends, and some have even decided to relocate and stay in Uganda permanently.

There are many excursions and local trips that volunteers can do in their free time. Details can be arranged directly with the hosts.

How to get to your site

Volunteers fly into Uganda by plane. A member of the local team meets them at the airport with a sign for easy identification and transfers them to the project site.
