The Appaloosa is a distinctive American horse breed renowned for its colorful spotted coat patterns. These patterns result from various spotting overlays on recognized base coat colors, influenced by the leopard complex mutation (LP). Beyond their striking appearance, Appaloosas are versatile horses excelling in disciplines such as racing, dressage, jumping, reining, and more.
Historically, the Nez Perce people of the Pacific Northwest developed the original American Appaloosa breed. The name “Appaloosa” evolved from “Palouse horse,” referencing the Palouse River region central to Nez Perce territory. Following the Nez Perce War in 1877, the breed’s numbers declined but were revitalized with the establishment of the Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) in 1938.
