What is worm composting? 🪱🌱
Worm composting, also called vermicomposting, uses suitable compost worms together with microorganisms to break down food scraps and other organic material. The resulting vermicompost or worm castings can be used as a soil amendment. Vermicomposting differs from hot composting because the system is maintained at temperatures suitable for the worms rather than relying on high-temperature decomposition.
Volunteering with vermicomposting
Tasks may include preparing bedding, feeding worm systems with suitable organic material, monitoring moisture and ventilation, separating finished compost and applying vermicompost to vegetable beds or other growing areas. Some projects combine worm composting with gardening, organic farming or waste-management activities.
If learning about vermicomposting is important to you, ask whether volunteers actually maintain the worm system or whether it is simply present on the property.
How to use this page
Check the publication date and confirm the current worm-composting activities, working hours, supervision, accommodation, meals, minimum stay and any fees or other costs directly with the host.
A project should only appear in this archive when worm composting is a genuine part of the volunteer work or learning experience. The presence of a normal compost pile or general organic farming activity is not sufficient.
