What is composting? ♻️🌱
Composting is the controlled decomposition of organic materials such as food scraps, leaves, plant residues and some animal manures into a stable material that can be returned to the soil. Methods vary from simple garden heaps and bins to larger farm systems, worm composting and managed hot composting. Composting should not be confused with simply storing organic waste or with the presence of a compost toilet.
Composting tasks and practical conditions
Volunteers may help collect and sort organic material, build or turn compost piles, add dry and wet materials, move finished compost, maintain composting areas or help construct new systems. Farm and community projects may combine this work with gardening, soil improvement, animal care or food production.
Ask what materials you will handle and what tools, gloves or other protective equipment are provided, particularly when manure or large compost systems are involved.
