Explore opportunities to stay at an NGO, charity or non-profit organisation that may welcome travellers as paying guests or supporters without requiring volunteer work in exchange for accommodation.
Some organisations offer guest accommodation alongside their volunteering programmes. Visitors may pay an agreed accommodation fee or contribution, while the organisation continues its social, educational, environmental or community activities.
What does staying at an NGO mean? 🛏️🤝
Staying at an NGO means being accommodated by a non-governmental organisation or related non-profit initiative as a guest rather than as a volunteer. The arrangement may involve a fixed accommodation price or an agreed contribution. Volunteering should not be required as a condition of the stay. This approach can overlap with justice tourism, although paying an organisation does not automatically guarantee positive social or environmental outcomes.
Guest stays and volunteering
A guest stay is different from a work exchangeA work exchange is an arrangement in which a traveller contributes an agreed amount of help to a host in return for benefits such as accommodation, meals or learning opportunities. Conditions vary by host., where accommodation or meals are provided in return for agreed tasks. It is also different from a fee-based volunteer programme, where participants pay a contribution and are still expected to work.
For example, PLANE Uganda and Marine Conservation Philippines have indicated that they can also accommodate paying guests. These arrangements must be confirmed separately from their volunteering programmes.
Not every organisation in this historical archive has a confirmed guest-only option. Some hosts may accept visitors only after discussing individual arrangements.
How to use this page
Check the publication date and ask the host whether accommodation without volunteering is currently available. Confirm the exact price or contribution, what it covers, room arrangements, meals, minimum stay, house rules and cancellation or refund conditions.
If supporting the organisation financially is important to you, ask how guest payments are used. Check the organisation’s identity, accommodation arrangements, local travel requirements and insurance needs before making commitments.
Guest payments or donations should never provide special access to children or vulnerable people. Respect privacy, consent and safeguarding rules during any visits or community activities.
Publication on Voluntouring.org does not constitute verification or endorsement of an organisation, its accommodation standards or claims about community benefits.
