Snorkeling can be connected with marine conservation, reef monitoring, environmental education, coastal research and some water-based tourism projects. However, not every opportunity near the sea involves snorkeling as a volunteer activity.
What is snorkeling? 🤿🐠
Snorkeling is the activity of observing the underwater environment while swimming or floating at the surface, usually using a diving mask, a snorkel for breathing and often fins. Unlike scuba diving, it does not require an underwater breathing apparatus. It can be recreational or part of organised activities such as marine wildlife observation, reef surveys and environmental education.
Snorkeling and marine volunteering
Depending on the project, volunteers may participate in supervised snorkeling surveys, underwater photography, marine species observation, environmental education or support activities connected with snorkeling programmes.
Some marine conservation projects instead require scuba diving qualifications, while others involve only shore-based activities. If snorkeling is important to you, ask whether it is included in the actual programme, how frequently it takes place and whether any previous experience or training is required.
Safety and respect for marine life
Snorkeling requires appropriate equipment, suitable water conditions and an honest assessment of swimming ability. Check currents, weather, visibility, supervision and the availability of flotation equipment. Avoid entering unfamiliar open water alone.
