Explore Shipibo volunteering opportunities and cultural exchanges connected with Shipibo-Konibo communities, organisations and projects in the Peruvian Amazon.
Opportunities may involve cultural activities, hospitality, translation, community support, traditional arts or practical assistance with locally organised initiatives. The activities available depend on each host and should not be assumed to include participation in spiritual ceremonies.
Who are the Shipibo-Konibo? 🌿
The Shipibo-Konibo are an Indigenous people of the Peruvian Amazon, traditionally associated with the Ucayali River and its tributaries. They have their own language, cultural traditions and forms of artistic expression. One of their best-known traditions is kené, a system of geometric designs used in textiles, ceramics and other forms of art. These designs have cultural meanings and were recognised as part of Peru’s National Cultural Heritage in 2008.
Volunteering and Shipibo cultural exchange
Some projects welcome volunteers to support everyday activities, communicate with international visitors or help organise cultural events. Others may involve traditional knowledge, arts or spiritual practices.
If learning about Shipibo-Konibo culture is important to you, ask how the project is connected with local community members, who leads the activities and what opportunities for cultural exchange are actually available.
For further background, visit the Shipibo-Konibo profile published by Peru’s Ministry of Culture.
