Explore sauna volunteering opportunities and cultural exchanges where sauna activities, traditional bathing practices or sauna construction form a recognisable part of the experience.
Some hosts organise sauna evenings for volunteers and community members, while others may involve participants in building, maintaining or preparing sauna facilities. In certain projects, access to a sauna is offered as part of the accommodation or cultural experience rather than as a volunteer activity.
What is a sauna? 🔥🧖
A sauna is a heated room or small building used for bathing, relaxation and social activities. Traditional Finnish saunas typically use a stove with heated stones, onto which water may be poured to produce steam. Sauna traditions vary between countries and communities, with different heating methods, temperatures and customs.
Sauna activities and cultural exchange
Saunas can be part of everyday community life, particularly in Finland and other northern European countries. Some volunteering hosts offer organised sauna evenings, while others welcome help with wood preparation, maintenance, construction or practical tasks associated with sauna facilities.
If taking part in sauna sessions is important to you, ask whether they are regularly organised, included in the exchange or available at an additional cost. Participation should be voluntary, with clear information about shared facilities, privacy and local customs.
How to use this page
Check each listing’s publication date and confirm current availability, volunteer activities, working hours, days off, accommodation, meals, minimum stay and any fees or contributions directly with the host.
For sauna-related construction or maintenance, ask about tools, supervision and fire safety. Sauna bathing involves exposure to high temperatures and may not be suitable for everyone. Confirm the facilities and safety arrangements before participating.
